The optimism about educating children with disabilities gave way to a (misplaced) fear of their "degeneracy." Oral speech was imposed on students at schools for the deaf, and sign language officially discouraged or forbidden. Most children with disabilities, if they attended school at all, did so segregated from able-bodied students. This area of the site looks primarily at the experience of deaf schools. |
