Education 1970 - PRESENT

The right to equal education was at the heart of the disability rights campaigns that gained momentum in the 1970's. The Education for All Handicapped Children Act (now referred to as IDEA) was passed in the early 70's and began to be implemented in 1977. For the first time in the United States, children with disabilities began to go to school regularly with their age peers. It is hoped that this investment will contribute to major progress in the opportunities for independence available to people with disabilities.
