Preserving a Language

Fearing that Sign Language would deteriorate as a result of the efforts to ban it in the schools, the National Association of the Deaf produced a series of more than a dozen films between 1910-1920 to preserve for posterity speeches, sermons, stories, and poetry by people they considered masters of the language. The images on this page are stills from one of these films.
