Community 1820 - 1870
During this period, the idea of a disability community didnt exist; the term disability was not used to describe a minority -- individuals were deaf or blind, sick or old, feeble-minded, epileptic. A new force making for identity among certain groups of people was beginning to take shape: the schools and institutions where people who were deaf or blind were gathered. Deaf people who attended schools like the American School for the Deaf began to form alumni associations. But most people with disabilities lived with their families and in their communities. Those who were destitute ended up in the almshouse.
