Looking at Leaders

Helen Keller became a symbol of individual triumph and was probably the most famous person with a disability. Far less well known is Clifford Beers who worked for improved treatment of mental patients. Jacobus ten Broek was a founder of the National Federation for the Blind -- one of the first organizations of people with disabilities to insist that those with disabilities sit on the board and direct the organization.
