Camp "Daddy" Allen
Many adults with disabilities who were children in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s point
to summer camp as the place where they first met other people with disabilities.
Summer camp provided them with a sense of being among peers, belonging to a group
who shared a sense of identity. They were also relatively accessible
environments. These two postcards are from Camp "Daddy" Allen in Pennsylvania,
an Easter Seals sponsored summer camp. The thank yous are a formula, and were
probably requirements for campers.
